Toxic Shame

Toxic Shame is certainly a talented and prolific duo that came together to record the music that they love. The band started out in 1995 as an avenue for Deon Du Toit and Jon Buckley to record rock music in their spare time for relaxation. By 1999, when the band signed a record deal with Universal Music in South Africa, Toxic Shame had recorded no less that 9 full-length albums that have been distributed to family and friends.

Full Circle their first official release on Universal, spawned two singles Sittin' and The Night Lives in Your Eyes, the first of which received moderate airplay on regional and national radio in South Africa. After disappointing sales, the band took almost 2 years off to pursue separate projects. Deon relocated to Cape Town for a while and Jon produced material for Jo Day, Kay Vee and recorded a solo album under the pseudonym Sundried. (Full Circle has now been re-mastered and includes 3 new tracks including their Christmas single Happy Xmas, War is over originally done by John Lennon)

Having re-grouped in December 2001 to record Tender Loving Abuse for release on the independent label Legend Music S.A., the 1st single Silent Movie reached number 1 on the Hi 5 and number 11 on the 5FM top 40. "It was the success of Silent Movie that finally got us off our arses and on stage" says Jon. The band quickly recruited top Johannesburg bassist Mike Dorea and drummer Cedric Wessels and went into intense rehearsals. Their first gig was at the Legend Music launch party on the 29th August 2002 and was a huge success. The machine was rolling and nothing could stop it. Cedric left the band shortly thereafter due to other live commitments and was replaced by powerhouse Manus van der Linde.

The band completed their 9th album and 3rd official release titled Kicking & Screaming in 2003 and embarked on an extensive national tour to promote the album.
